What is SEO

As people who just recently started to be interested in SEO we will try to cover some basics in this short article. So what SEO means? It is an abbreviation of 3 simple words - search engine optimization. Even if you know the words standing behind the magical letters probably you still wonder how and what. We will start explaining the search engines, what they are. Simple and most popular examples are Google, Yahoo, Ask, Bing, AltaVista etc.

Search engines are web applications allowing you to search. Some of them are specialist in different topics others provide much wider range of information. Google for example use robots which crawl through website’s links to find information. This information will be visible in the search result. Of course when you first start with a site for for example it will be very difficult to show on the first place in Google results for the word kafe. You will be most probably very far behind all your competitors. Here is when you need to understand that the optimization is one of the most important services that you have to provide to your web site. SEO or Search Engine Optimization will place you much quicker and much better in the search engines results.

Google index positioning

We tried to research issues relating to the traffick and the items in the Google index. Most of the people are convinced that the top 3 results get the cream and indeed after the 15th position clicks occur only by chance. In one of our projects we have got the top 3 positions in the google index. The interesting facts came after we traced the telephone calls. 92% of the customers called to the first, second and third web sites in this order. They had to make a phone call to get to know the price and details for the purchase. Here came the surprise. Most of the orders - over 85% of the orders were placed to the web site on the third position. First explanation is that the third time when customers get confirmed price and service they place the order.

This leads to the conclusion that the most important position is not necesery only the first, but the first three positions are very important, otherwise someone else is getting the orders. This is of course a very simplified situation. Looking at more positions we will curtanely get different results.

The additional factors like the customer service voice, prices (if different), external information, web site design, the difference in the service. The client loves the new but not before he checks and compare with other similar services.

This picture is also simple - the customers have no idea how much the product costs and have no idea what is available. More variables will give more possibilities, but here at least we see that not only the first place matters.
